Yvonne surveyed the rows of unassuming houses in Barnfields, an estate north-east of Newtown, as she and Dewi approached Dilwyn Jenkins’s family home.

“Callum left a message,” she told the DS after listening to voicemail. “They’re knocking on doors, and going through CCTV from every shop and street corner in the Llanidloes area, looking for evidence of the missing man, Liam Stone.”

“Have they found anything yet?” He asked, eyes scanning the front garden of the Jenkins’s house, spying a battered Land Rover in their lean-to.

“Not yet.” She sighed. “I hope it’s only a matter of time… Liam has to have left traces somewhere.”

Dewi rapped on the PVC door.

When it opened, Dilwyn’s wife Pat appeared in the frame, her slender form diminutive as her fingers curled around the edge of the door, knuckles pale.

“Mrs Jenkins? I’m DI Giles, and this is DS Hughes. May we come in?” Yvonne’s tone was polite but firm.

“Of course.” Pat stepped aside, allowing them entry into the dimly lit hallway. Inside, the house appeared meticulously kept, and the DI caught a whiff of air freshener or cleaning fluids as they passed into the lounge.

“Please, call me Pat,” she murmured, her gaze flitting between the detectives as she led them to a modest two-seater sofa. They settled on the pale-blue couch, while Pat plumped cushions on one of the two armchairs before perching on its edge, nowhere near the fattened cushions she had prepared, posture rigid; eyes round.

“We’re investigating the deaths of three men in woods above The Dingle,” Yvonne began, watching the woman’s face for any flicker of emotion. “We understand your husband was out the same night those men crashed their car and wandered into the trees.”

“Is my husband in trouble?” Her voice trembled, and she swallowed hard.

“We are still gathering statements from those who saw the lads, your husband being one of those.” Dewi interjected. “We understand you went up there to pick him up?”

Pat hesitated, eyes darting towards the window before returning to the detectives. “Not from the Dingle… I didn’t pick him up from there. I drove to Garthowen shops. He had parked the car along Plantation Lane. He was a bit the worse for wear, if you get my drift.”

The DI grimaced. “We know, we saw the aftermath.”

“Oh yes, the damaged cars…” Her words tumbled out, edged with a nervous energy. She ran a hand through greying-blonde hair. “He made a bit of a mess, didn’t he?”

“He did.”

“He’s learned his lesson, you know. I think that night’s events taught him something he won’t forget in a hurry.”

“Would you mind telling us about that evening?” Yvonne sat back on the sofa, her gaze not leaving Pat’s face.

“Um, it was like any other night, really,” she faltered, the tremor in her voice belying her words. “Dilwyn was late coming home, as he often is after drinking. He loses track of time after a few pints.”

“Late coming home, from where?” the DI prompted

“From The Inn, at Dolfor. He used to work on a farm out that way, and he still has several friends who drink and eat at that pub.
